Private Samuel Redmond

Samuel Redmond was born on 22 February 1901 at Aghafatten, Broughshane, County Antrim (after his twin sister Mary Jane), the eighth of twelve children of farmer John Redmond and his wife Jane (née Crawford). By the time of the 1911 Census the family had moved to a farm at Castlegore, Connor, County Antrim, Samuel living there with his parents and eight of his ten surviving siblings.

Redmond enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Ballymena on 29 April 1918 (Corps of Hussars No.72086). He was described as being 5' 5" tall, with a fresh complexion, fair hair and blue eyes. He gave his age as 19 and his occupation as a farm labourer.

Redmond was reported to have deserted from the regiment's reserve base at Antrim on 28 October 1918. It is not known if he was subsequentially apprehended.

He later emigrated to New Zealand.
